If Putnam is right about the source of the difficulty, then no autonomous
syntax (of the sort required by generative grammar) could in principle
be supplied with an adequate theory of meaning. A theory of grammar
that takes syntax as the study of uninterpreted formal symbols will
forever be meaningless. What is required is (...) a theory of syntax in which syntactic categories are semantically motivated and grammatical constructions come with
