Montague grammar as a piece of abstract theory is in fact rather interesting and

even beautiful, but it is worth pulling ourselves up short and asking ourselves whether

Montague has not in fact totally changed the subject; whether we need a framework

consisting of an n-tuple of sets of possible worlds, moments in time and other contextual

elements in order to make sense of the chatter of the man, woman or child in the street. Where

is our sense of fitness and proportion if we do? It is a loss of that robust sense of reality

enjoined on philosophers by Russell.
