SOME NEW BOOKS ON THE NON-CHALCEDONIAN CHURCHES

NIKOLAI SELEZNYOV, The Christology of the Assyrian Church of the East. The Main Documents & Development of the Doctrine. (In Russian).
The author continues his book “Assyrian Church of East” (2001), a general introduction to the history of the Church of East (cf. XB 3 (2001) страницу моей аннотации в ХВ 3 Таня!!!), by an introduction to its Christology.
The purpose of the book can be understood more easily if we add to its subheading “...from the standpoint of the modern Assyrian Church itself”. Then, the lack of analysis of the East Syrian hesychast doctrines (condemned by the Nestorian councils in the VIIIth and the IXth centuries) or of the development of the iconoclasm (out of the Nestorian Christology), as well as a rather superficial analysis of the doctrines of, e. g., Nestorius and Martyrius-Sahdona are quite understandable. The book is still interesting as a popular introduction to those documents of the Assyrian Church that are actual to its self-representation in our days’ ecumenist movement.

Since her first book on a specific non-Chalcedonian Church (The Malankara Orthodox Church. Visit to the Oriental Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of India (Geneva, 1996)), Christine Chaillot became known as an author of travel notes of a voyageur in the countries of the Christian East. Of course, her books are also interesting because of some reference data or a concise exposition of the history of the corresponding Churches, but, first of all, their unique value is a first hand knowledge of the people, of the faithful and the clergy. Mlle Chaillot is a genuine Christian Traveller, one of those so familiar to us in the centuries of the past, but certainly a rare figure in the late 20th century. She managed to access a somewhat optimal ratio between the competence of a Christian student and the ability of a traveller visiting different countries and contacting different people. Some of Mlle Chaillot’s friends know that her travels were not always safe, and, in particular, that in Ethiopia had cost her so much that we have to be grateful to God for seeing her alive and her new book appeared.
We can agree or disagree with Mlle Chaillot’s ecumenical attitudes, but, in any case, we have not to disregard her brilliant sketches of the modern life of the ancient Church traditions. It is difficult to restrain oneself from a customary Orthodox wish to the tireless author: Χρονία πολλά !
